The Ri-Bhoi District Congress Committee (RBDCC) inspected Iongkhuli village today following yesterday’s border flare-up where Assam police manhandled Mawhati MDC Charles Marngar.
The Assam authorities claimed that the village belongs to Assam and uprooted an electric pole that had been erected by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL).
The RBDCC inspection team comprised Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, Umroi MLA George B Lyngdoh, Nongpoh MDC Balajied Rani and other district party leaders.
Syiem strongly condemned the actions of the Assam police in Iongkhuli, which is part of Raid Marwet of Hima Mylliem.
To maintain peace and harmony in the border area, Syiem also urged for the immediate intervention by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and the state government.
Regarding the border dispute, the Congress Party will take up the matter with the state government and will continue to push for a permanent settlement between the two states so that Meghalayans will not have to face further harassment by forces from Assam.
Separately, Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun informed that he has requested the state government to provide police personnel for the safety of the local people.
Sohtun and Jirang MDC Victor Rani, both of the National People’s Party, also inspected the village today and condemned the violent acts of the neighbouring state.
