Nongpoh, Aug 1: The recent aggressive eviction drive by the Assam government against so-called illegal migrants has now posed a potential threat to villages within Ri-Bhoi, particularly those located along the inter-state border.
There are general fears that illegal migrants caught up in the eviction drive or those who choose to leave before action is taken against them, may choose Meghalaya to resettle in..
To address this concern, the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong Ri-Bhoi District (SKRSRB), through a statement issued by its secretary PB Sylliang and chairman BB Makdoh, has appealed to all village leaders and Dorbar Shnongs to remain vigilant and proactive.
Speaking to the media, Sylliang stated that the Synjuk wants all Dorbar Shnongs to thoroughly monitor and verify the identity of individuals coming from Assam, as there are growing concerns about attempts by illegal migrants to enter Meghalaya.
At the same time, the Synjuk has urged the Meghalaya government to strengthen security at the infiltration check gate at Byrnihat, which it says is currently inadequate for checking people and vehicles entering Meghalaya.
