The leaders of the Congress Party in Ri-Bhoi have expressed their serious concern over ‘atrocities’ committed by the authorities of Assam in areas of Meghalaya that are disputed by the neighbouring state.
The Ri-Bhoi District Congress Committee visited areas under Raid Nongtung today to get a sense of the situation on the ground.
The party was led by Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, Umroi MLA George B Lyngdoh. They and Congress workers held a meeting in Jatalong village with the traditional leaders of the area and patiently listened to the complaints of the local people.
The others to take part in the meeting were traditional leaders Miwell Shadap and Blikshon Sohtun, who expressed the hope that the Congress legislators would be able to take their problems to the level of the state government.
Due to the border dispute, the local people of the border area are facing atrocities and harassment by the Assam police and Forest Department, who also interrupt developmental work implemented by the Meghalaya government without respecting the status quo which was agreed to by both governments.
Syiem and Lyngdoh promised that they will take up the matters of concern with the Meghalaya government.
