Jumping, rather belatedly, on the bandwagon, a group has been formed called Ka Sur ka Them Ri-Bhoi to add strength to the call for justice for ex-militant Cherishterfield Thangkhiew, who was shot dead by police last month.
Since the August 13 killing, groups all over Khasi Hills have sprung up claiming to be the voice (“sur”) of the local people and have demanded that the police involved in the incident be suspended.
Ka Sur ka Them Ri-Bhoi held a press conference today where its members, Jayson Lennox Nongrum and FM Mawphniang, said that the public had pushed for such a group to be formed for Ri-Bhoi.
The outfit has extended its support to Ka Sur Ki Nong Mawlai, which has been leading the fight for justice for Thangkhiew.
Meanwhile, the group, ‘Ka Sur U Paidbah (Voice of the people) today stated that the MDA government is “dictatorial” and pays no attention to the people’s demand.
“The current leadership of the State is governing like dictators and turning a deaf ear to the legitimate demands of the people,” spokesperson of the group Thomas Passah said.
Stating that the demand for the suspension of the top cops involve in the raid has not been taken seriously by the government he said with numerous voices coming from the people including the MLAs and various political parties the government should listen as the first step towards peace and harmony.
He said that the demand that started from Mawlai has now become the “voice of the Hynñiewtrep”.
