Khliehriat, Apr 6: Residents of Umkyrpong village today gathered to voice their concerns regarding the proposed establishment of a cement plant by Star Cement.
The villagers accused Waheh Shnong Mithol Lamurong of issuing a no objection certificate in a questionable manner, which has escalated tensions within the community.
Umkyrpong village in East Jaintia Hills has a population of approximately 500 individuals and 197 households under Elaka Sumer.
Rowin Langstang, a local resident, stated that the Waheh Shnong signed the no objection certificate late at around 8 pm, which is highly unusual for such important matters. He said that critical documents should be signed during regular working hours, not at night, raising doubts about transparency and accountability.
The villagers are now urging their local MDC, Krison Langstang, along with JHADC CEM Thombor Shiwat, to take necessary actions against the traditional head.
During a meeting, community members discussed the potential negative effects of the cement plant on agriculture and local environments. Soi Lamare, representing the women of Umkyrpong, spoke about the collective determination of villagers to oppose the project. She noted that only a small group, comprising family members of the Waheh Shnong, was involved in signing the NOC.
Since January 5, the statement against granting the NOC to Star Cement has resonated strongly amongst residents, as they expressed their desire to protect their land and community from pollution.
