Concerns have been raised over haphazard dumping of mud into the Ranikor River for construction of a two-lane road project from Khadphra to Nongjri.
Residents of the area while welcoming the road project lamented that such uncontrolled disposal of mud and debris in the river has raised serious environmental concerns. Added to this, they said that works carried out during the day is affecting traffic movement over the stretch.
Ranikor river is known for its crystal clear water and home to various species of fish and other aquatic life and residents take pride in it as it attracts a number of tourists and a source of income for many families.
The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Ranikor area unit has also noted the mud-filling in the river and stated that it was mandatory for the company to mark a proper site disposal of mud.
Unit president, John Marweiñ said that the river has started changing its colour. “The company involved in the construction work has been dumping mud, stone and debris in the river without studying the effects it would have.”
He also pointed out that the company should control blasting to mitigate the effect of blast hazard on the Borbasing Bridge.
