A report on ‘Children at Risk: A Study in Shillong Urban Agglomeration’ was released by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo yesterday.
The report was prepared by Reach Shillong Ministries, a charity that is committed to street children, orphans and the like.
Laloo said that the research is a thorough and timely study, which is necessary for social work. The research looks at the four main rights of children – survival, development, protection and participation.
Children at risk are those under-18s who have experienced “intense chronic risk factors or a combination of factors in the personal or environmental domains that prevent them from pursuing or fulfilling their potential.
The research was conducted by Reach Shillong Ministries and was supported by the District Child Protection Unit of East Khasi Hills.
The aim of the study was to analyse the experiences of children at risk, to determine the available services from government and non-government organisations and recommend suitable intervention for enhancing the children’s well-being.
