The Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Task Force on Child Labour of East Khasi Hills has informed the general public that the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986 prohibits the employment of children under 14 years of age in any occupations or processes.
In addition, no adolescent who is between 14 to 18 years of age shall be employed or permitted to work in any hazardous occupations or processes as provided in the Schedule of the Act. Whoever employs or permits any child or adolescent to work in contravention with the provisions of the Act shall be liable for imprisonment for a term of six months, which may be extended to two years or with a fine of between Rs 20,000 up to Rs 50,000 or both.
Every commercial establishment shall display in a conspicuous and accessible place a notice in both local language and English containing an abstract of Section 3 and 14 of the Act. Non-compliance is punishable with simple imprisonment extending to one month or with a fine upto Rs 10,000 or both.
