The regional parties within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance do not have the mettle to question senior coalition partner, the National People’s Party, Mylliem MDC Ronnie Lyngdoh said today.
“Will the regional parties be able to survive the 2023 state elections? The people have seen through and through what they are after. With so much going on with the government, nobody in the regional parties has the guts to tell the major partner what you are doing is wrong,” he told Highland Post.
Talking about the alleged diversion of funds in the Saubhagya electricity scheme, he asked, “How do the regional partners in the government justify such observation by the CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General)? Are you trying to destroy institutions as well? You don’t have the guts to ask your major partner that there is a CAG observation regarding a particular scheme where funds have been misutilized.”
Lyngdoh also raked up the killing by police of ex-HNLC leader Cherishterfield Thangkhiew in August.
“If there are allegations that the person is involved in an IED blast, is this reason enough to shoot a person? Even Ajmal Kasab, involved in the 26/11 case, was given a chance to defend himself before he was hanged,” the MDC said. “On mere suspicion a person gets shot and the people who shot the person are not suspended.”
On the regional parties, he said that they have closed their eyes and ears in order to remain in power in the MDA.
“Whether we talk of mining, implementation of government programmes or all the anomalies that come up every day in the news, the regional partners dare not question its major partner,” Lyngdoh said.
