Any alliance between regional parties should last longer than an election season, cabinet minister Hamletson Dohling of the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) said today.
The PDF, with four MLAs, is part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government but is not part of the Regional Democratic Alliance, which is made up of the United Democratic Party and Hill State People’s Democratic Party.
When asked if PDF is willing to join the RDA, Dohling said that the party would consider such a move if invited to join.
With regard to the PDF’s preparation for the 2023 election, Dohling said that it has begun internal meetings to reorganise the party organisation.
Meanwhile, he expressed similar views to the other regional forces by having the opinion that the coming of the Trinamool Congress to Meghalaya will benefit regional parties.
“We have seen the division among the regional parties all these years and the split of votes during elections but, with the coming of the TMC, this division will now occur between the national parties, which will only boost the regional parties,” Dohling told some reporters.
However, he also felt that individuals still matter more than any party in state politics.
