Shillong, Aug 1: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for East Khasi Hills on Saturday.
The district is likely to experience heavy and even extremely heavy rain in places with thunder and lightning as well. In addition, South West Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills will be under orange alert. The rest of the state will be under yellow alert.
Weather forecasts are fluid, however, and the IMD may change its advice when it issues a new update tomorrow.
There has been intense rain on the southern slopes of East Khasi Hills for much of this week, with Sohra, Mawsynram and Pynursla all receiving 70-130mm of rain per day. Today the Mawsynram area received even more, at around 130-204mm.
All this rain may not bring much relief to the rest of Meghalaya in terms of water supply or power generation as it has been concentrated almost exclusively on the southern slopes of East Khasi Hills.
