Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh launched the Red Ribbon Campus Programme at St. Mary’s College, Shillong, to promote awareness and combat HIV/AIDS among students.
The programme was attended by the Principal of St. Mary’s College, Sister Mary Harriet, health officials, and a large number of college students.
Lyngdoh made an appeal to ensure that no child is born with HIV/AIDS by the end of 2028. She emphasized that the government cannot implement HIV/AIDS laws alone and urged every citizen to take initiative in fighting the disease.
The minister called upon students to start the fight against HIV/AIDS immediately and stressed the importance of supporting the Red Ribbon Club with counseling activities. This, she said, would encourage girls with problems to come forward and avail themselves of services.
Lyngdoh also highlighted the need to empower women to fight against the menace of HIV/AIDS, which has severely affected society.
St. Mary’s College Principal Sister Mary Harriet expressed gratitude to the state government for launching the Red Ribbon Campus Programme, which aims to make students aware of the consequences of HIV/AIDS.
She advised students to lead upright and ethical lives, ensuring happy and strong family bonds.
Jeremaiah Nongrum, a reformed drug addict, shared his personal testimony, warning students about the dangers of drug addiction and urging them not to engage in such destructive behaviour.
