Shillong, Dec 6: Fisheries Minister Timothy D Shira inaugurated Rs 50 lakh recreational fisheries project at Katongre, North Garo Hills, under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
The “Mountain Lake” project, managed by Presdalline Momin and a committee, aims to boost eco-tourism, angling, and community livelihoods in the scenic area.
Addressing the gathering, Shira highlighted the project’s potential to enhance rural incomes, promote sustainable fishing practices, conserve biodiversity, and attract tourists. He urged locals to take ownership, maintain cleanliness, and beautify the site with ornamental trees. He also spoke about state initiatives like FOCUS, FOCUS+, and CM Elevate supporting livelihood improvements.
MLA Pongseng R Marak praised the project for conserving aquatic species and boosting tourism.
Fisheries Director A. Mawlong, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Abhishek Saini, Superintendent of Police Pawar Swapnil Vasantrao and local residents were present on the occasion
The minister also released fish fingerlings to mark the launch.
