Shillong, Mar 19: Dirt motorbikes are not street legal, meaning that they are designed exclusively for off-road use, private property or specialised tracks.
However, a video of a child riding one such bike on Shillong’s city streets has sparked outrage among the public.
The video clearly shows a small child riding a miniature dirt bike in the Laitumkhrah area, a bustling commercial and residential hub.
Although the child is wearing a helmet and is not speeding in the video, the risk factor to him and pedestrians, etc, is still high.
In the age of the viral video several instances of Shillong’s roads being used for video content such as this have come to the fore in recent years. For example, over the winter, there was a hue and cry after the streets around Khyndailad were used for an impromptu gathering of excessively noisy vehicles. Certain roads are also used for high speed bike/car rides – all of which are captured blatantly for the camera.
