Shillong, Nov 25: Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman of the Jaintia Hills regional committee on border Sniawbhalang Dhar said that although the Assam government has slowed down its process to resolve the long pending border dispute, due to upcoming elections, the Meghalaya side is ready for whenever the talks begin again.
“We are requesting them from time to time from our counterparts. Whenever they are ready, we are also ready to meet,” Dhar said.
He also said that the regional committee will soon submit its report to the government and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will then convene a meeting at the state level first.
The two states have resolved six areas of difference but another six remain pending and negotiations to resolve these have been stuck for years now. In the meantime, tensions often boil over between residents of the two states, such as in Lapangap recently.
On the situation in that village, Dhar said that it was normal. “On the part of the government we are ensuring that peace should prevail,” he added.
