The office of the Child Development Project Officer, South West Khasi Hills District today organised Rashtriya Poshan Maah – ‘Poshan Vatika on Rain Water Harvesting and Conservation and Distribution of seeds’ at Mawkyrwat Community Hall which was participated by members of Anganwadi Centres in and around Mawkyrwat.
District Social Welfare Officer, H. Sahkhar said the scheme is implemented throughout the country with an objective to eradicate malnutrition in the country. Malnutrition has not only affected the health of women and stunting in children but it is the main cause of anaemia and several other disease, she said, adding that through such programmes people will be informed on how to grow plants in gardens in Anganwadi Centres and on how to conserve and preserve water through water harvesting and use of seeds.
District Horticulture Assistant Director, A. Malang District said that agriculture has been long forgotten and it is through such platforms that agriculture can be revived through hard-work, dedication and commitments. He stated that if farmers were to expect good crops they should cultivate in a systematic and scientific method by using good seeds and by sowing at the right season. He said that plants needs food and vitamins in order to grow and yields good crops, therefore vermin compost, fertilizers, multiplex etc should be used in cultivation in order to enhance agriculture.
Water Resources, Assistant Engineer, K. Khongsit explained about rain water harvesting and encouraged people to take start preserving water.
Seeds were also distributed to four Anganwadi centres of Mawkyrwat, Mawbidong, Sohkhyllam and Nonglang at the programme.
