Shillong, Nov 19: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has condemned the tragic accident at NEHU, where a speeding car driven by a security guard rammed into students.
The incident which happened on November 17 has sparked outrage over drunken driving and road safety.
Reacting to the horrifying incident, HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem said, “The safety of our children and youths must be our paramount concern. Rash driving is not an accident; it is a crime born of negligence. We demand that justice is served accordingly and concrete steps are taken to prevent such tragedies from ever happening again.”
The HYC has urged the Police department and other authorities to intensify patrols and implement strict monitoring, particularly in and around educational zones and high-pedestrian traffic areas, to ensure zero tolerance for speeding, drunk driving, and other forms of reckless behaviour.
It also sought review and implementation of safety measures, such as installing speed bumps, clear crosswalk markings, and additional signage, at the site of the incident and other vulnerable areas in the State.
“We should not wait till another incident of such a nature to happen before necessary steps are taken,” Synrem said.
