Two days after an act sexual assault on a minor was revealed, Rakban Ch Momin, the suspect, surrendered himself to police yesterday.
The surrender comes in the wake of several police raids that were undertaken on the house of the accused and those of his relatives since information on the incident was received by the authorities.
Momin, a resident of the village of Beti Apal in North Garo Hills, was known to the victim and allegedly committed the crime when he was entrusted to take the 14-year-old to school on April 17.
He had tried to intimidate the victim from filing a complaint or telling anyone but was found out after the girl was questioned by those known to her.
The girl, an orphan, was being cared for by a family where she was helping with household chores while also getting herself an education. A case was registered at the Mendipathar Police Station on May 1. However, the accused had absconded two days before.
“He surrendered yesterday, May 3, to the police in the office of the SP and was taken into custody. An investigation into the incident is currently on,” said Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma.
