Illegal coal and limestone mining activity has been reported from Ranikor civil sub-division, prompting the Additional District Magistrate to promulgate an order under Section 144 of the CrPC to stop it.
Lease agreements to mine coal have not been notified in Ranikor civil sub-division yet “unconfirmed reports” of illegal mining have been received by the authorities. Reports of limestone mining beyond that sanctioned by the government have also been received.
A National Green Tribunal magistrate has been appointed to check illegal extraction of coal and to prevent environmental destruction and ecological damage and to safeguard the rule of law.
The order under Section 144 of the CrPC prohibits the stocking and stacking of coal or limestone by non-lease holders, prohibits the felling of trees in mining areas, prohibits the entry into mining areas of coal or limestone, prohibits mining activities in the interest of coal mining and prohibits the kind of mining activities/machines in areas in furtherance of illegal limestone mining and prohibit the stocking of limestone on Public Works Department roads and public properties and deemed public property.
