Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma once again blamed past state governments for ignoring the education sector in Meghalaya after the circulation of news reports of a school that struggles to function despite a broken roof.
Recently the minister had pinned Meghalaya’s low ranking in the Performance Grading Index (PGI) of education in the country on past governments.
Today Sangma said that for the past two to three decades, successive governments failed to construct or even renovate school buildings.
He asserted that it was only under the current government that steps have been taken to improve the condition of educational institutions, adding that several schools have already been renovated under Phases 1, 2, and 3 of the state’s Education Mission. The government is now awaiting funds to implement Phase 4 of the project.
The minister further informed that school officers and headmasters have been asked to submit renovation proposals on a priority basis.
