The month of June saw an increase of rainfall in Meghalaya.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Upper Shillong, the State experienced a 25 per cent increase in rainfall during the month of June.
The centre confirmed the excess rainfall on July 1 and predicted continued heavy downpours until July 5.
Meanwhile, incessant rainfall on June 30 and July 1 has led to landslides in various parts of the State.
One of the most affected areas due to landslides includes the Lawbyrtun-Rngikseh road in Eastern West Khasi Hills.
Teams from Mawthadraishan Block are currently assessing the damage.
Two more landslides have been reported at Tiehsaw on the Nongstoin-Shillong highway.
In Garo Hills, a house was completely destroyed by a landslide at Deran locality near Chitoktak, Tura.
In East Jaintia Hills, a portion of National Highway-6 was washed away by rainwater at Lumshnong forcing authorities to halt movement of traffic.
Due to the inclement weather condition and likelihood of further landslide along the Rngain stretch of Shillong-Dawki road, the Sub-Divisional Officer, Pynursla Civil Sub-Division has advised the general public to exercise due caution while travelling along the road.
The officer advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel on the road during heavy rain and also during night hours. He also informed that the situation is being monitored closely for the safety of the general public.
