Signature campaigns, candlelight vigil, effigy burning continue to be held in the State spearheaded by groups formed to demand suspension of cops who raided the house of ex-militant leader, Cherishterfield Thangkhiew that led to his death.
In Shillong, the group, ‘Ka Sur Ehrngiew ki Nong Upper Shillong-Mylliem held a signature campaign in Kynton and Laimer, Nongkseh. In the evening, the group also burnt effigies of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government, Director of General Police (DGP) R. Chandranathan, East Jaiñtia Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Jagpal Singh Dhanao and the SP (Traffic) of East Khasi Hills District.
Thangkhiew, cousin sister of Cherishterfield who also took part in the protest expressed dismay over the adamant attitude of the government who fail to pay heed to the voice of the people and their demands.
“As family we were very happy that Cherishterfield had returned home and join mainstream but we never imagined that he would fall prey to such brutality,” she lamented.
“It has been a month but our heart is heavy and it’s hard to accept the fate that our brother. We pray that we get a fair and clean judgement,” she said.
In Mawlai Kynton Massar, the locality where Thangkhiew resided, people held a candlelight vigil to mark a month of his death.
The group, ‘Sur Na Them Ri Bhoi’ also held similar protest at MUDA Complex, Nongpoh. Leaders said they would continue to support the group in Mawlai, who were also present there today.
Former MDC of Umroi, F.M Mawphniang was also present during the protest meeting.
