Shillong, Feb 5: The Jaintia National Council (JNC) staged a surprise protest march to the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) office, condemning the council’s failure to address illegal trading by non-tribals and implement Pnar alphabet.
JNC president Sambormi Lyngdoh stated that despite their demands, no action was taken against non-tribal traders and the 2021 resolution to recognise the Pnar language and alphabet remains unimplemented.
The JNC is demanding revocation of trading licences, implementation of the Pnar language and a special session to promote the Pnar alphabet.
“The protest aims to wake up JHADC to safeguard local indigenous people’s rights,” Lyngdoh said.
