Sherwin May Sungoh and Fameline K Marak have finally taken over as Pro Vice-Chancellors for the Shillong and Tura campuses respectively of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
Sungoh is of the Department of Education and Marak the Department of Garo. They had both initially refused to take up the posts when appointed in November 2024 by Vice-Chancellor PS Shukla, who was facing sustained protests from students and staff.
On the Tura campus, Marak’s formal joining ceremony as Pro VC was held today at 10:30am. The ceremony was attended by faculty members, administrative staff, and students.
After formally assuming the new position, she expressed her commitment to fostering an inclusive and innovative learning environment where students and faculty members can thrive and excel in their respective fields.
“The potential of NEHU Tura campus is immense and I am honoured to take on this role at such a critical juncture. My focus will be on academic excellence, infrastructural development and meaningful research that contributes to society,” she said.
Marak is a distinguished academic and one of the senior-most faculty members at NEHU Tura. She joined the Department of Garo on June 1, 1996.
Meanwhile, Sungoh is a renowned academic and educator, serving as a distinguished professor in the Department of Education at NEHU Shillong.
With an illustrious career in higher education, her research and teaching expertise spans pedagogy, curriculum development and educational policy.
She has made substantial contributions to NEHU’s academic growth over the years, actively engaging in various research projects, publications and administrative roles.
