Four pressure groups including headmen under the Synjuk Waheh Shnong in East Jaiñtia Hills district today took out a protest rally in Khliehriat against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and demanded implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP).
The rally which commenced from Khliehriat Higher Secondary School ended near the statue of freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah wherein effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were burnt as a mark of protest for introducing CAA.
Speakers at the rally reiterated that the State will continue to protest till they secure ILP. Questions were raised as to why other parts of the North East like Nagaland and Manipur were covered but not Meghalaya.
President of the Synjuk Satly Ryngkhlem urged people to join hands to secure ILP for the State and stated that only NGOs would be able to voice out the concerns of the people and that public representatives have not been able to perform.
