A group called the A’chik State People’s Front (ASPF) has come out against the move to shift responsibility for a 2km stretch of the Rongjeng-Bamil-Adokgre Road from the Williamnagar Division of the Public Works Department to that of Mawshynrut.
The group’s Eastern zone unit said that this move would disrupt essential services and hinder ongoing development efforts in East Garo Hills.
A government notification on July 5 said that the shift in responsibility was “in the interest of works of the Department and for administrative convenience”.
“Garo Hills still needs substantial development and enhancement in their infrastructure,” ASPF said. “The transfer of this road to another division would deprive our community of our resources and attention needed for such advancement. It is imperative that the government recognises the unique needs of our area and ensures that all infrastructure projects and maintenance efforts continue to be managed locally by the PWD Williamnagar Division.”
