The Shillong Press Club (SPC) has filed a First Information Report with the police over the alleged assault of a driver who works for local newspaper Mawphor last night.
Ferdison Mylliem Umlong was driving a car with a press pass affixed to the front windscreen. He was not using the car for official purposes, rather he had driven his mother and mother-in-law to purchase medicines from a pharmacy.
At around 8:50pm, when the white Maruti car reached the Mawlai Umthlong main junction, it was “severely vandalised and the driver grievously assaulted by a group of over enthusiastic CRPF personnel,” the FIR stated.
The two women managed to escape but Umlong was assaulted by the men in uniform, the SPC claimed. The car was also badly damaged by the CRPF personnel, it was said.
The SPC called on the Superintendent of Police to investigate the matter thoroughly.
