Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal today explained that certain neighbourhoods in Shillong have been enduring power cuts due to work under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
Residents of Umpling, Rynjah and elsewhere have been expressing concerns regarding power cuts of late.
The RDSS is a central government scheme launched to improve the reliability and quality of the power supply. The scheme is designed to make power more affordable and financially sustainable.
In some places electric poles are being changed, new lines are being brought in and transformers installed, necessitating a shutdown in supply.
Mondal added that the Power Department has enhanced the manpower assigned to the task and that he is aware of the inconvenience caused to consumers. “We have cut the stretches in a shorter space so that the frequency of shutdown is reduced and also the area of shutdown is also reduced,” assured the minister.
He also appealed to the consumers to bear with the Power Department as this is the only time they can complete this work before the arrival of the monsoon.
