The inauguration function was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner PK Boro and Deputy Director Commerce and Industries Centre, Shillong, ML Wanshnong.
The programme is being conducted by the Institute of Packaging, Kolkata centre, supported by Union Ministry of Commerce and Industries in collaboration with the Meghalaya government’s Commerce and Industries Department.
In his inaugural address Boro said that indigenous artisans from Tyrshang and Larnai are fortunate enough to have and to be trained by the two experts who have come from Mumbai and Kolkata with regards to packaging their products.
In due course of time the artisans will be able to sell these indigenous items and also earn profit from it without involving any middleman, just like the famous Lakadong turmeric, products where the farmers can now directly export their products to buyers.
“I feel proud today that the artisans from Tyrshang and Larnai are able to preserve their indigenous skills and, with the initiative taken by the Commerce and Industries Department, these things will move one step further and, financially, it will be very viable for them in due course of time,” Boro added.
The programme aims to bring awareness and knowledge to artisans on the packaging materials available so as to enable them to be able to pack their products for safe transport to other parts of the country and thereby increasing their sales.
