A portion of the Mawphlang-Balat Road in Nonthymmai village collapsed today after heavy rains, affecting traffic movement and commuters left stranded.
While no one was injured the disconnection will affect scores of border villages.
Mawsynram MLA, HM Shangpliang took note of the mishap and rushed to the site. He told Highland Post that the executive engineer from the PWD, Mawsynram division will oversee the immediate construction of a sub-way to ease the villagers.
He said it will take about two days but hoped a sub-way will provide temporary relief for the people. “ I am concerned about those villages beyond the portion of this road that include Pyndensohsaw, Dangar, Balat, Ranikor and all the border villages down the line because this road is the lifeline of this part of the border,” he said.
Therefore, Shangpliang said he would again raise the issue before Deputy Chief Minister in charge PWD, Prestone Tynsong. “Time and again I have raised the issue in the assembly and wrote several letters to the Deputy Chief Minister that the road needs an upgrade.”
Stating that the Mawphlang-Balat road is going to be constructed only till Weiloi and not beyond, Shangpliang has also urged the government to sanction for the upgrade of all roads constructed since 1950.
