In a move that will affect the average Meghalaya kitchen, the price of pork is set to rise by 10.5 per cent after a decision on this was taken by the Khasi Jaiñtia Pig Butchers Association today.
The association held an executive committee meeting today at Mawiong Abattoir where it was decided to raise the price by Rs 380 to Rs 420 per kilogram.
Andy Lyngdoh Nongpuir, general secretary of the KJPBA, said that the butchers were forced into the move because of higher fuel costs and taxes and fees they incur at check gates in the state.
Nagaland is also paying higher prices for pork from Assam, making it necessary for Meghalaya to match this price rise in order to secure supplies.
