Shillong, Mar 31: The Polo Hotels Group, through its subsidiaries Hotel Polo Towers Limited, Shillong and Manor Floatel Limited, Kolkata, launched its second Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project in Sohra.
This initiative focuses on waste management and was inaugurated today at Polo Resort in Cherrapunjee.
This project aims to support the ‘Clean, Green and Safe Sohra’ campaign launched by Hima Sohra in October last year. Key assets donated include a Tata 612 tipper truck for waste collection, four Bajaj Pulsar motorcycles for patrolling, and awareness signboards labelled “Keep Sohra Clean”.
These initiatives are designed to improve sanitation, ensure regular waste collection, and promote hygiene standards in one of Meghalaya’s prominent tourist destinations.
The inauguration event was attended by the local community and dignitaries including Sohra SDO Mark Andrew Challam, Kishan Tibrewalla, Chairman, Polo Hotels Group, Mynjurlang Majaw, Acting Chief and Syiem Elect, Himasohra and representatives from the Rotary Club.
Tibrewalla highlighted Polo Hotels Group’s commitment to community development. “Sohra is not simply a destination on our map. It is the very heartbeat of what Polo Hotels Group stands for. For years, we have learnt that the most enduring businesses are those that leave the land better than they found it. This initiative is our pledge to Sohra and to every community that has trusted us to be a worthy neighbour—Clean Sohra, Green Sohra,” he said.
Alan West Kharkongor, Adviser (Tourism), Hima Sohra, expressed deep appreciation for the support extended by Polo Hotels Group towards addressing pressing environmental challenges such as waste accumulation and open littering. He further informed that a scientific waste management project will soon be implemented, aimed at providing a long-term solution to open dumping and positioning Sohra as the first zero-waste town in Northeast India.
Chandana Das, President, Rotary Club of Shillong, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance of collaborative CSR initiatives.
