The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) has directed factories and ferro alloy units to install online emissions monitoring system.
MSPCB member secretary Dr. GH Chyrmang informed that the system will enable the board to detect any excess emissions online.
The directive was given to representatives of the units located in the Khasi Jaintia region, who attended a workshop conducted by the board on ‘Online Continuous Emission Effluent Monitoring System for Air Polluting Industries’ today.
Chrymang said the programme was held for “non attainment” areas like Byrnihat, which exceeds pollution limits set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
He pointed out that all the three categories of factories are immensely contributing to the air pollution, but said that the ferro alloy units and coke factories lack guidance when compared to the cement factories.
“Cement factories have been established in the state quite a long time ago, so in terms of expertise, technicians and infrastructures they are well advanced. So bringing them all together with the attendance of external expertise will bring in a much needed positive impact,” he said.
