Voice of the People Party (VPP) president and Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit today said that other political parties in the state are spreading misinformation just to confuse the voters.
Addressing an election rally in support of the VPP’s Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah KHADC candidate, Strongpillar Kharjana, today evening, Basaiawmoit said, “This is an attempt to discredit the leaders of the VPP, so that the public get sick (of the VPP) and to become suspicious of its leaders.”
He was commenting on a video clip that went viral on Thursday. Taking an indirect dig at disgruntled party MLA for North Shillong, Adelbert Nongrum, the VPP president said that the VPP is trying to bring in a new culture where the party is supreme, not an MLA or MDC.
Nongrum is at loggerheads with the party after being reportedly overlooked by its leadership while selecting candidates for Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah and Jaiaw constituencies.
Basaiawmoit also said that the VPP is trying to change the concept of a political party which is to teach the public about the ills of corruption, starting with giving up on freebies and money handed out during election campaigns.
He said that naysayers doubted that the electorate would easily give these up but he pointed to the 2023 Assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha elections where, he said, the VPP hardly spent anything during campaigning.
“Now doling out cash can no longer work. For the VPP the public is supreme,” the VPP chief said.
