Shillong, Mar 17: West Garo Hills police seized a cache of weapons and detained several individuals at a checkpoint at Araimile in Tura yesterday.
The operation was part of intensified surveillance across vulnerable areas, police said. The region is still tense following last week’s civil unrest between tribal and non-tribal communities.
Several vehicles were intercepted and searched, yielding machetes, hammers, catapults and other objects suspected to be intended for violence.
The items have been confiscated and the individuals are being interrogated. They reportedly stated they were heading towards the plain belt area, but authorities are investigating the motive and possible larger conspiracy.
In response, West Garo Hills police have stepped up security, intensifying naka checking and maintaining a strict vigil. The public is appealed to cooperate and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or the Tura Police Control Room (PCR) on 8837423053, 7005530510 and 9089199064.
