Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong today said that Meghalaya Police is set to complete the recruitment process for 3,000 vacant posts by June 2025.
Tynsong told the Assembly that the State government understands the concerns raised by the members on the shortage of personnel and the delays in investigation and chargesheet. He said that the Meghalaya Police Recruitment Board is actively working to fill the vacancies, which have remained unfilled for several years.
“The recruitment process is underway, and I assure the House that by the end of June 2025, or the first quarter of the 2025-26 financial years the process will be completed,” he stated.
Tynsong said that the 3,000 vacant positions have significantly impacted the functioning of the police department and that filling these posts is a priority.
He attributed the chargesheet delays primarily to the shortage of manpower but said the department is making every effort to expedite pending cases. “The Director General of Police herself is personally overseeing the pursuit of pending cases to ensure timely completion,” he added.
The Deputy Chief Minister also announced the creation of a Police Infrastructure Renovation Fund of Rs 50 lakhs to each district for the Superintendent of Police and Deputy Commissioner to identify and renovate vulnerable police stations and outposts. The government is prepared to enhance the allocation if additional funds are required, he added.
In response to a proposal by a member for the creation of a fire service station at Smit, he promised to examine the feasibility and said the government is committed to improve emergency services across the state.
