Police officials from West Khasi Hills district led by Inspector General of Police (Law & Order), Mukesh Kumar Singh today visited a coal mine in Nengchigen village to conduct an enquiry into reports of illegal rat-hole mining activities there.
While the police officer was not available for comment as his phone was not reachable sources said that a report on the enquiry would be prepared to be submitted to the High Court.
The High Court had filed a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) on illegal coal mining at Nengchigen following a FIR by a nokma. The court had sought an independent report from the Chief Secretary and the acting Director General of Police.
The inquiry report regarding illegal coal mining in the State especially at Nengchigen village in West Khasi Hills will be filed by Chief Secretary Rebecca V. Suchiang before the deadline given by the Meghalaya High Court.
The independent report on the matter will be submitted to the court at the next hearing on March 2.
