With the emergence of impersonation calls and messages, East Khasi Hills police has issued an advisory asking people not to respond to any calls or messages they receive or install any screen sharing app.
The advisory was issued today after there are cases reported of impersonation through social media platform like WhatsApp, Messenger etc.
Police said the scammers would pose as bank or e-commerce entities and ask customers to install third party apps for screen sharing, which is usually not done by genuine institutions.
Describing the modus operandi of the scammers, police said they pretend to be Head of the Department/employee of various institutions and convinced people to share their credentials, OTPs. In order to gain the confidence of the victims, the fraudsters also put on DP (Display Picture) of the said HOD/employee.
Further, for financial fraud transaction, fraudsters circulate messages/call on the cell phone for KYC update and sometimes pretend as Customer Care operators/representatives and ask the victims to install screen sharing apps like Team viewer, Quick Support, Any Desk etc.
