The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has directed the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) to submit a report on the alleged torture of a 19-year-old man in the Sohra police station to the commission by July 31, 2025.
“After going through the complaint (though this is not happily drafted), we are of the considered view that some prima facie violation of the human rights of Getwin Jyrwa appears to be made out for inquiry by the commission. However, before making such inquiry, we deem it prudent to seek a report to this effect from the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills,” the MHRC stated in its order.
Yesterday, the mother of Getwin, Milred Jyrwa, filed a complaint with the commission, alleging that her son was tortured in custody and made to drink water from a toilet at the Sohra police station.
Her son had been summoned by police on July 3 and Milred had herself dropped him off there in the morning. However, when she returned to pick him up in the afternoon, she found him seriously injured.
Getwin was subsequently taken to Sohra Community Health Centre and later referred to Shillong Civil Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.
The victim alleged that after he was dropped off by his mother, the police took him for a medical checkup and when he was brought back to the police station they started hitting him with batons. The victim has injury marks on his buttocks, thighs and calves.
He said that the police summoned him after he was involved in a drunken brawl with another person on June 28.
The Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Pynursla, Baialamphang Wanswett, has been tasked with conducting an inquiry and submitting a report by the end of the week.
