The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Ampati zone, has written to the regional manager of State Bank of India (SBI) to seek the installation of an ATM in the village of Purakhasia in South West Garo Hills.
In a letter to the SBI officer, the NGO stated that the people of the area were facing a problem of transacting on a daily basis and an ATM would be a godsend.
“They have to go to Dalu-Barengapara to withdraw or deposit money or even to withdraw (money from) government schemes. Further, when they have to withdraw MGNREGA (rural employment guarantee scheme) wages, it poses a security risk as they carry huge amounts. They have to manage their own security, which is dangerous,” said unit President Salman Sangma.
