The Mait Shaphrang Movement (MSM) has demanded recognition of Phan Nonglait as the first Khasi woman freedom fighter.
In a letter to Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh here today, MSM secretary Mygaurdy Thabah said that on May 29, Supreme Court lawyer from Meghalaya, Daniel Stone Lyngdoh had released a book titled ‘Ka Phan Nonglait’ after an extensive research and also after going through some British records.
MSM also said that together with Seng Samla Jaiaw Laitdom in 1994 and 1995 it had staged a street drama titled ‘Ka Drama Jong Ka Phan Nonglait’ in different localities of Shillong and in Nongkhlaw village highlighting the contributions of Phan Nonglait to the freedom struggle.
“A book of the play was also published and the forwarding address was written by the late Dr. Barrister Pakem, then Vice Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University,” the MSM added.
According to MSM, with the publishing of this book on the life and contributions of Phan Nonglait, it is time that this unsung hero be given a place in the history of India’s freedom struggle and a pride in the history of the State.
MSM also requested the Speaker to use his good office “to ensure that the first Khasi woman freedom fighter gets the recognition she rightly deserves”.
