After months of a Covid-imposed ban on opening places of worship and the conduct of weddings, the state government today decided to lift its total prohibition on these, though restrictions will still apply.
From August 16 places of worship will be allowed to reopen but at only one-third of seating capacity. Marriage ceremonies will also be permitted from that date, though receptions will still be banned.
These decisions were taken after inputs were received from the district administrations, religious leaders and other stakeholders.
Reopening protocols will be issued by the Chief Secretary in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner has relaxed shop opening hours, with all establishments in Greater Shillong now allowed to operate until 5pm.
Shops will still be allowed to open only on the days specified in the DC’s last order, which was issued over the weekend.
