Shillong, Mar 9: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the participation of non-tribals in GHADC elections was withdrawn.
The petition was filed by Niksrang Ch Marak before the Meghalaya High Court.
“The petition is, accordingly disposed of as withdrawn,” a division bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh said.
The court said it had gone into the merits of the petition but all contentions of all parties on merits are kept open.
A notification issued by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) recently barred non-tribal people from contesting the April 10 elections.
The notification has made it mandatory for all candidates to possess schedule tribe certificate for contesting the polls.
Rajabala MLA, Dr. Mizanur Rahman Kazi, former legislator and ex-Member of District Council, SG Estamatur Mominin and other minority groups from Garo Hills have petitioned Governor, CH Vijayashankar to strike down the notification.
