The Jaiñtia Fishing and Environmental and Protection Association (JF&EPA) has warned the public against any further pollution of the Myntdu River in West Jaiñtia Hills district by washing clothes and fishing.
According to the organisation, many notices have been issued against pollution along the river but no one respects orders or notices.
JF&EPA president, D.H. Pde at a press conference today said the Myntdu, considered the guardian force of Jowai and its surrounding areas, provides drinking water to the entire town. But now the quality of water is severely affected day by day due to rampant pollution, fishing and even washing of clothes.
Pde said henceforth violators will be seriously dealt with in accordance with the law. He also urged other organisations to work together effectively for the restoration of the river.
The organisation also suggested that the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) could work out on cleaning the river to help fishes survive.
Furthermore, fishing from the fish sanctuary at Syntu Ksiar, which the organisation had set up with the support from the government, is prohibited.
Pde said the fine imposed on violators has been hiked from Rs 10,000 to Rs, 50,000.
