Shillong, Feb 2: A peace meeting was held at Ampati on Monday to address the unrest affecting betelnut sales in Garo Hills due to communal tension.
The meeting, convened by the South West Garo Hills District Administration, was attended by various stakeholders, including Nokma Council members, religious leaders, and betelnut farmers and traders.
Speakers highlighted the concerns of betelnut farmers and emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and communal harmony.
The recent incident at Goalgaon village in Rajabala was condemned, and participants called for restoring peace and normalcy in the region.
Deputy Commissioner Anendya Raajsshre appealed to the public to uphold communal harmony and cooperate with the administration.
Superintendent of Police Vikash Varma urged communities to maintain peace, verify social media information, and report incidents to the police instead of taking self-action.
The administration assured participants that it is working towards a long-term solution with West Garo Hills and South Salmara districts of Assam.
Traders and residents were urged to remain patient and calm.
