Nongpoh, Aug 19: The district administrations of Meghalaya and Assam have set up a 16-member Peace Committee to review the present situation and suggest ways to foster peace and normalcy in Maikhuli.
Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal told reporters today that the committee comprises eight members each from both the states. He said the committee is tasked to address the dispute amicably and ensure that peace is maintained in the border villages.
A tense situation unfolded in Maikhuli village yesterday after local residents dismantled electricity poles that had been erected by the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB). The incident led to a confrontation and clashes between villagers from Meghalaya and Assam.
Baranwal said the district administrations of Ri Bhoi and Kamrup are taking the issue seriously. He urged the public not to resort to actions that could disturb peace and communal harmony in the border areas.
He further stated that both district authorities are committed to settling the matter through dialogue and understanding, emphasizing that the Peace Committee will work closely with the people to safeguard peace and stability in the border.
