Shillong, Jan 13: West Shillong MLA Paul Lyngdoh has written to Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh to express concern over deficiencies in power transmission and distribution in Meghalaya.
Paul Lyngdoh highlighted frequent load shedding, unplanned shutdowns and supply disruptions affecting households, businesses and essential services.
He pointed out that despite previous claims of an improved power situation, the reality remains starkly different, with power interruptions continuing unabated.
Paul Lyngdoh urged the Minister to take urgent action, seeking clarity on power purchase planning, transmission infrastructure, AT&C (aggregate technical and commercial) losses, automation and quality of consumer supply.
The MLA requested a comprehensive action plan with timelines for improvement, emphasising the need for reliable and equitable electricity supply, a fundamental governance responsibility.
He sought a meeting with senior officials to discuss constituency-specific solutions and finalize a roadmap.
The Power Department has consistently maintained that there is no load shedding in the state at present because supply is sufficient to meet demand. However, there has been a need for scheduled power cuts from time to time for upgrades and maintenance work.
Although it may be unrelated, it is interesting to note that both Lyngdohs are senior members of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and there were reportedly rifts between them after Paul was pushed out of the cabinet last year seemingly at the behest of Metbah, who wanted a turn in a ministerial chair.
