The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has urged the State government to pass an official resolution in the State Legislative Assembly urging the Government of India to officially wind up any programme or proposal to mine uranium from the State.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today, the HYC said that it is vehemently opposed to any steps or act of the Government of India to mine the uranium deposit in the State.
“Although, time and again the people of the State have shown strong protest against the proposed mining of uranium, yet the Government of India is still contemplating to established mining centre and exploratory mining of uranium in the State as can be seen in the reply of the Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions And Prime Minister’s Office (Dr Jitendra Singh) to the Unstarred Question No. 1777 dated 27.07.2022 in Lok Sabha,” the HYC said.
“Since the State Legislative Assembly represents the voice of the people of the State through the elected representatives, it would be prudent and forceful that the Assembly pass an official resolution in this regard and to impress upon the Union Government to stop any attempt or to do any act on its part to mine uranium in the State of Meghalaya and to officially close down any programme or proposal in this matter in the future,” it added.
