The two newly elected Lok Sabha MPs from Meghalaya, Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon and Saleng A. Sangma are arriving back to the State after the House was adjourned sine die yesterday. Moreover, the Rajya Sabha has been adjourned sine die today.
The 18th Lok Sabha began its first session of Lok Sabha from June 24.
The session also saw Syngkon, the Lok Sabha MP from Shillong, taking part in the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address.
Syngkon, who belonged to the VPP, was among the 68 Lok Sabha MPs who took part in the debate. However, more than 50 MPs laid their speeches on the table of the House.
The debate was replied to by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after a discussion of more than 18 hours yesterday.
During the debate, Syngkon raised the demand for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution.
The Shillong MP highlighted the importance of recognition of Khasi language adding that he wishes to address the House in Khasi like other MPs who got the chance to speak in their own mother tongues.
On the boundary issue, Syngkon pointed out that people of Meghalaya living in the border areas are facing unrest and livelihood challenges due to border disputes.
Moreover, Syngkon pressed on the need to have more examination centres in Meghalaya for CUET to suit the convenience of students from far flung areas.
Furthermore, he highlighted the poor infrastructure in Umroi airport stating that it lacked the capacity to accommodate large planes. This, according to him, is a hurdle to promotion of tourism in Meghalaya.
The Shillong MP also urged Prime Minister Modi to prioritise development prospects in the North East region.
