The Meghalaya High Court has sought a preliminary report from the State government as to how the coal that was brought from Assam managed to enter Meghalaya and dumped at Gasuapara in South Garo Hills.
Further, the High Court asked the State government to produce proof of the entry of the coal into Meghalaya and the origin of the coal.
The division bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh passed the order today after hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Champer M. Sangma.
Sangma filed the PIL seeking the High Court’s action against the alleged manipulation of documents by the State government for transportation of coal brought from Assam and originally meant for export to Bangladesh.
The High Court also ordered that a copy of the PIL be forwarded to the Assam government. The next hearing on the matter is scheduled on August 2.
